The Eye of the Needle - Eye of the Needle, Richard Marquand (1981) The Duchess
Henry Faber (Donald Sutherland) known as code name''needle''is one of the most famous Nazi spies. During one of his missions, he discovers that the allies have built a huge deception to fool one landing in the Pas-de-Calais. Armed with sufficient evidence, Faber must find the submarine, which leads him back to the Führer. Trying to reach the rendezvous point, the boat crashes on an almost deserted island where the couple collects. The Eye of the Needle is a very successful spy thriller that owes to the future director of Return of the Jedi
here adapts a novel by Ken Follet. The film is a mix between a very successful cord suspense and a surprising romantic facet. The first part is a breathless chase used to demonstrate the skill and the kind of ruthless killer Faber including his weapon, methodical and lethal giving the film's original title .. Seen manipulate everyone, multiply the dead on his way and flee Scotland Yard who hunts across England following his clever discovery of actual coordinates of the landing.
Donald Sutherland is there one of his best roles, terrifying coldness in Nazi spy and that this characterization of the first part which helps to make threatening in the second part more sentimental. His flight took him to the island of Stirm where he met Kate Nelligan, lonely married woman and married to a disabled person. Surprisingly, the killing machine then shows its faults, the book without giving away most of its activities and solitude of the two get closer to an amazing love story. Kate Nelligan is excellent opposes a fragile but determined presence in Sutherland that will make the face face less lopsided than it seems. The romance is also not supported beyond measure, interrupted periodically by the exactions of Faber (including a thrilling murder of a cliff) the film never loses shedding its latent tension.
When the identity of a spy unfolds, the suspense is then Hitchcokien devil, between the false pretense of everyone trying to hide his discoveries about another exciting then a hunt on the island where almost reversed roles. Kate Nelligan hardens the frail under the weight of the threat of Sutherland in love and suddenly unable to deploy deadly skills displayed since the beginning of the movie .. It requires all the finesse of the players to get the thing and the final exchange between them provides a sequence as violent as emotional. The atmosphere at the crossing of genres and feelings is the greatest asset of the film reveals its lower limits by staging a little timid of Marquand. Yavait it a truly great film to take such a subject, the state was an effective entertainment that is not so bad. Another major attribute, the score of the great Miklos Rozsa flamboyant which should disappear shortly after and offered an outlet there worthy of his legend.
