Murder in Italian - A maledetto imbroglio, Pietro Germi (1959)
A jewel robbery has been committed in a stately building of Rome. Charge of the investigation, the Commissioner Ingravallo focuses first on the suspicion Assuntina fiance, Liliana Banducci's servant who lives in the apartment opposite. But the case turns murkier and more complex than expected: the theft victim appears reluctant to assist police, and her fiance Assuntina seeking to marry in haste and in a few days later, Banducci was found dead ... murdered
Murder in Italian is a beautiful demonstration of the extent of the register by Pietro Germi, here delivers a thriller of the most compelling, exuding his usual themes with the same acidity as in his comedies. The film is an adaptation of the novel
The Awful Mess Rue des Merles of Carlo Emilio Gadda, great literary success at the time. Germi has redacted all the purely literary book, which gave great importance to the word games from the regional origin of the characters. The director actually gives them less room than in
Divorce Italian (on the archaic Sicilian mores) or
Signore & Signori . We appreciate the allusions nevertheless crept through a few minor characters truculent as the deputy commissioner, archetypal Sicilian loudmouth and without embarrassment.
The detective story is very cleverly done by a germ which is the opportunity to show his love for movies black Americans. The story mixes the narrative enigma with the mystery of the sordid murder of a woman well in all respects, while the progressive revelations about his shady entourage allow Germi issuing a scathing tale of manners. Statutory rape, financial blackmail, male prostitution, slander: anything that will make the salt Signore & Signori
already be found there. The detective had simply replaced the comedy as revealing the defects of the Italian bourgeoisie. The film does not sink in a serious yet so pronounced and despite the context of humor are traits lighten the atmosphere. The improbable encounters, some dialogue and situations and offset of the secondary characters hilarious dilute intermittently very dark tone of the film.
Pietro Germi brilliantly interprets the Commissioner conducting the investigation. End psychologist and tenacious, it is simply excellent and charismatic, pity he partly abandoned his acting career took off when the director completely. There is also a very young Claudia Cardinale in housekeeper, another role of people like her daughter could play in its infancy but the plot will give a surprising turn. The resolution is up to what preceded, sordid and confusing while being imbued with the social context expressed from the beginning.
