During World War II Silvio Magnozzi is tough and participates in the drafting of an underground newspaper. So he seeks refuge in a hotel it is discovered by a German who wants to shoot him. He was saved by Elena, daughter of the landlady. This cache, and they fall in love. A few months later Silvio resumed underground. One of the finest films of Dino Risi, who liberated his first major success really personal with the perfect balance between the intimate story, a farce and a darker side and politicized. When should he give up his dreams and ambitions to be resigned to a "normal" life and tidy? That is the question that arise throughout the film hero played by Alberto Sordi. Intellectual left dreams of grandeur, he is regularly confronted with the harsh reality that his integrity but his vanity led him to a dead end impossible to overcome.
Silvio is a character up endian never let go of his principles, even self-destruct and lose gradually all those he loves. The film analyzes very well the evolution of Italian society, of any policy by the end of World War II to the materialism of the nascent early 60's who will crush the hero. It is gradually left the hopes born of the collapse to release the image of the hero's life where pride in its commitment will become a true burden for his family. Some big political events in the country are reviewed including the tragic defeat of the Left in 1948 which broke a lot of momentum and hope born of Mussolini and after the film expresses very well certain concepts like the opposition between the rich north and south of the rural poor, while still alive. Despite the dramatic backdrop, it is the angle comedy that dominates the way a Sordi exceeded only will adapt to this new deal for more ridicule than not.

The ambiguity of Sordi between conviction and lower ambitions is revealed in the moments when he drops the most particularly cruel words that drunken frustration he pours his wife (Lea Massari beautiful) Smash career that has hampered his destiny by enclosing it in a domestic prison.
