Dizziness - Per le antiche scale, Mauro Bolognini (1975) Sabotage

In Italy, in 1930, Prof. Bonaccorsi, eminent psychiatrist, conducts research on the insanity in the asylum where he works as a doctor in Tuscany. He has three mistresses, Bianca (his assistant), Carla (wife of a colleague) and Francesca (wife of the director of the asylum). A newcomer, Dr. Anna Bersani, is there a probationary period, very quickly, she opposes theories Bonaccorsi ...

Two years after Freedom my love, Bolognini was continuing its study of fascist years with an unexpected angle Vertigo. Inspired by the writings of the doctor Mario Tobino, the film plunges us into the daily life of a medical team in a lunatic asylum.

At their head, there is Marcello Mastroianni, Surgeon fully invested and confident of finding an explanation "organic" to the madness, and conducting research in order to detect the germ. The balance switches places with the arrival of a university assistant played by Marthe Keller, the Freudian psychoanalytic approach. Its external view will update the various dysfunctions, including reports strange qu'entretient Mastroianni with other women according to the asylum. His supposed benevolence is seriously called into question by various revelations and behavior revealing at the turn of a dialogue "all the syndromes of schizophrenia."

This is the great theme of the film, an Italian patient where the border between madness and a healthy mind is more tenuous than it appears, isolation and society of mentally unbalanced eventually be contagious . Bolognini multiplies indices such as the opening credits show us a costume party where Mastroianni made-up appears in the middle of his patients without it makes a difference, or even the sick being cured (although unexpected relapse are legion) assigned chores. Mastroianni is brilliant ambivalence and Bolognini offers three beautiful portraits of women with Marthe Keller, Francoise Fabian and Barbara Showalter, each contained uprightness, fidelity decay, virtues, placing them under the yoke or in opposition to Mastroianni.

The supporting actors are also superb, Pierre Blaise (unforgettable hero Lacombe Lucien ) in human lucid but fragile child and especially a beautiful Adriana Asti maid demand morbid physical love. Bolognini gives the same thoroughness to his asylum (the film was shot in a true asylum, the presence of fools directing the actors' performance) than most shimmering period decor that his other films, the exterior is barely glimpsed for a camera oppressive. The conclusion is also scathing when it finally leaves the scene: the discourse of black tunics vindictive appears hardly more sense than the fools we worked alongside the film. Yet the one who ruled the country's political and leading to his downfall ...
