Ciociara - Vittorio De Sica (1961)
In 1943, a young woman, widowed, decides to flee the capital with her daughter to find peace in his village. often accused by the hardline neo-realism of having sold his soul to the devil with his great comedies of the 60's, with De Sica gives
The Ciciarra (released in 1961) a response with this dazzling crossroads of work drama and comedy tinged neo-realism of the beginning.
The story recounts the painful fate of the Italians, working class everyday difficult as the conflict begins to turn, and more specifically of refugees fleeing the cities pounded by bombs to go to the country more peaceful and secure. We find the whole art of De Sica to paint a picture of his peasants immediately endearing, somewhat ignorant and not knowing whether they should not always support the Duce and the Germans then side with the English, leaning toward the likely to bring them as soon as peace. The whole is symbolized by the character of Sophia Loren, courage and vindictive mother desperate to preserve her daughter from the horrors of war.
De Sica is definitely the best film for Sophia Loren, whether in its glamorous veneer (see
Yesterday, today and tomorrow or the first part of
Marriage Italian ) or as here in his side most authentic real country girl, despite his stay in the city and still has a sex appeal disconcerting. In contrast is the character of Jean-Paul Belmondo (dubbed in Italian) in intellectual vindictive aware of the masquerade of fascism, a very subtle role that such ordinary people and showing the extended register lucid Belmondo's debut. The Fascist hardliners are not hidden either with regularly, the shadow of the militia that is felt.
It thus follows the lives of this small community, between bursts of laughter (Sophia Loren aligns brilliant rejoinder), material difficulties with food increasingly scarce and the danger of German patrols and bombing. The gradual rapprochement between Loren and Belmondo is well led and the relationship of the latter poignant with his daughter (Eleonora Brown is the young amazing charm and fragility).
The film totally rocking in its last half hour very dark, while the danger seems to depart with the arrival of the Allies. Between the tragic fate of Belmondo, a traumatic rape scene from Sophia Loren and her daughter (a terrible reality denouncing the abuses of the general body of Alphonse Juin in the region apparently consisting of soldiers from colonies and brittle look less nuanced recent
native) and their relationship breaks up slowly in the wake of this shock. A funny contrast when the worst happens when peace shows its face and the tone light and bittersweet from the rest of the film switches to the real drama on the end. His role earned a well deserved Oscar for Sophia Loren who was on this occasion the first non-English actress being offered the ultimate accolade.
