Sitting at a sidewalk cafe, a man writes his memoirs, he recounts how his fate was finally sealed when, at the age of twelve, because he had stolen the drawer of the family grocery store to buy beads, he was deprived of dinner. The same evening, his whole family dies poisoned by eating a dish of mushrooms. Only in life and having thus recognized the futility of being honest, he will thereafter only one ambition, to become rich. Seeing his survival a sign of fate, he chose to achieve his goals by becoming a professional thief and cheater.
With The Romance of a cheater , Guitry finally found its mark in film after previous unsuccessful attempts at what is one of his brilliant films and considerable influence. If one were to summarize the movie in one word it would shift as it seems to be the credo of Guitry in the way of constantly surprising treat. It appears from this generic not like the others where between false bravado ( This film I directed and produced myself ... ) and real respect for its employees Guitry replaces sacrosanct panel team names below to reveal those at work and the casting proper.
shift again since this past highlighted the initial narrative will monopolize the speaking voice, playing all the characters. The film is a kind of duel between the constant tradition of the silent and powerful modernity where the link is precisely this voiceover interspersed with short time Guitry dialogue when writing his memoirs in a bar. The opening is on children with the most exhilarating wordplay bouncing on the current image during the presentation and then the fateful demise of the family which is already showing a game very outrageous comedy and drama in the gestures and facial expressions directly from the silent era. The art of the ellipse halo of a certain black humor is also reflected in the way of eliminating the various members of the family table during the meal fatal mushroom poisoning, small sounds fun and cartoonish slapstick amplifying the key of all. 
whole film works well, always bringing a small additional idea that avoids repetition. So when our hero tumbles in Monaco, Guitry has the audacity to insert images that document the Rock away by his ironic commentary also outright mocked when handling the daily parade of the militia Monaco transformed into a strange dance. Nothing is too daring as this sequence as an ode to the beauty of his companion Jacqueline Delubac whose face looks seductive and charming scroll in all the outfits and hairstyles possible, supported by the flights of Guitry. 
The Scorsese of Goodfellas and especially Casino even looks at a memorable lesson in cheating at cards that inspired the staging (the game with the mirror for the appearance / disappearance of the card in his sleeve) married to a dazzling sense of rhythm in the scenario including the ticket placed on half The gaming table reproaches critics accusing him sometimes to filmed theater is particularly unwelcome as he shows ease and inventiveness. 
The biggest difference however is the cunning with which Guitry himself plays the film's subject. The hero finds himself on a path of crime and vice in spite of him constantly, almost always women and not toy is not active for most of history. Once decided to engulf his new "career" fate will bring him back on track paradoxically by misfortune almost mystical (the whole passage with Jacqueline Delubac) or by the illumination of a meeting at the end. Novel certainly a cheater, a cheater but missed all the fun that Guitry is much value in the brilliance of his hero (the sequence where all his disguises and scrolls that look towards the target in telling the same movement Devices grand!) that humiliates, mocking his appearance and aging of cowardice. The final spin also brilliantly supported this idea by unveiling the new "features" of the cheater. A real gem that has not aged.
