Berlin - Desperate Journey, Raoul Walsh (1942)
During WWII, the crew of an RAF bomber shot down over Germany, the 5 survivors organized and start looking for a flight back to England, but on their way they multiply they sabotage enemy installations meet ... Dedicated figurehead of heroism to Warner in the film as historical adventure that westerns, Errol Flynn, the second world war was started transpose this image in Patriotic war movies in vogue once the United States engaged in the conflict. Desperate Journey
is one of the first that runs under the guidance of one who knew so well to highlight the previous year in The Charge
Fantasy . It is also not far from the great adventure films of yesteryear with a pitch exciting as hell where the survivors of the crew of an RAF bomber shot down their mission to cross the half of Nazi Germany to regain their land.
Everything is done to make all the more exciting as possible. There is virtually a rebound, an action scene where a twist every ten minutes on a frenzied pace leaving no time to rest. It is spectacular from start to finish with a Warner seems to have made the mass media. The first aerial part is really very impressive with a thrilling duel bomber aircraft and the English by the German shells pounded all filmed with skill by Walsh, supported by remarkable special effects (transparencies, models perfect). The commando members are characterized with good humor and tenderness, complicity and friendship block under one doing courageous spirit and heroic (including a very funny Alan Hale amateur soldier sputum nuts ...). So a high-flying entertainment and not as a death that is taking place, very pleasant.
And ultimately it's just the problem of the film. The formula to Errol Flynn is implemented in a context of war but is predictable and without roughness (the appearance of a female character seems almost dictated by the necessity), not necessarily because of the political context, moreover, since '
an Adventure in Burma more openly propagandist is far more interesting than
Sabotage Berlin. Except for a surprising final episode Munich, the show offers no surprise that even in his death marked the characterization can anticipate while the wicked Germans are transparent (Raymond Massey usual fabulous in this register is a poor opposition). Relaxation is manifested by very pleasant moments (gags when the heroes are captured in the German general staff), but loses a bit of attention when the tone should be more dramatic it all seemed very forced as the encounter with the resistance German.
Despite the stunning set pieces (including a car chase rather extraordinary final) it read carelessly enough to finally even if it is actually very well done. You could be waiting a bit longer than that of Walsh ancestor
Where Eagles Dare, the latter going so much in the bidding and good feelings without mechanical it is ultimately more fun to follow his model. Fortunately Flynn and Walsh will make it better later during their long association.
Released in Region 1 DVD box set recently in the "Errol Flynn Adventures" which we will decrypt the content these days gradually. With a vf, subtitle and French as it is multizone and Warner compatible everywhere. Preview
